NORTH STAFFS ANGLO GERMAN CLUB VISIT TO MANCHESTER
German-themed walking tour of Manchester
On the fine warm afternoon of July 22nd, 10 of us met at Manchester Cathedral for our German-themed walking tour of the City Centre. Our superbly informed guide Jonathan Schofield regaled us with stories of the city’s 19th century connections to Prince Albert of Sachsen-Coburg-Gotha, patron of its 1857 Art Treasures Exhibition; Jacob Behrens of Bad Pyrmont, founder of its oldest textile company and Hagen-born Karl Halle, aka Charles Hallé who founded the City’s orchestra and its school of music. Last not least Friedrich Engels, communist revolutionary, friend and supporter of Karl Marx, who lived in Manchester for 22 years. Manchester was the inspiration for Engels’ seminal work “The Condition of the English Working Classes in the 1840s”. Engels’ Mancunian links with have at last been commemorated with the erection of his statue (recycled from a Ukrainian village) which was unveiled just a few days before our tour. We then had lunch with Jonathan (third on the right side of the table) in his favourite Italian restaurant, Salvi's Cucina, near Deansgate.
BELOW ARE A COUPLE OF PHOTOS OF THE OCCASION
Herzlichen Dank an alle, die mitgekommen sind!
